Best Family Adventure Movies On Amazon Prime
As much as you'd like to, we all know you're not spending every weekend in the great outdoors. But that doesn't mean you can't hone your survival skills (or critique some ignorant director's) with a good survival flick.
Here are some great survival movies that you can stream this weekend. Let us know if we left anything out.
Even if it's not accurate, survival movies are entertaining, and really make you appreciate your soft couch and air conditioning. Nothing like sipping a frosty beer while watching some actor succumb to dehydration, no?
Check out our picks below.
Everest, 2015
Having successfully summited all 29,029 feet of Mount Everest, a group of climbers faces their biggest challenge yet. With little warning, a massive storm engulfs the mountain and leaves the men struggling to stay alive and work together. Based on a true story of the 1996 events, the film may not live up to real-life mountaineering experiences, but it's entertaining just the same. Available to rent on Amazon for $3.99.
Into the Wild, 2007
The well-known story of Christopher McCandless and his trek from an affluent home to seek adventure in the Alaskan wilderness is given the Hollywood treatment by director Sean Penn and actor Emile Hirsch. While not totally true to the book, the film effectively visualizes McCandless' journey and motivations. It also contains one of Kristen Stewart's most watchable performances. Available on Netflix and to rent on Amazon for $3.99.
The Mountain Between Us, 2017
Settle in as two strangers find themselves stranded on a mountain after a plane crash. Realizing help is not on the way, they set out to cross hundreds of wilderness miles. Available to rent on Amazon for $5.99.
All Is Lost, 2013
An unnamed mariner played by Robert Redford finds himself stranded in the Indian Ocean after his yacht collides with an abandoned shipping container. With no communication or navigation equipment, he must use a sextant and compass to find his way into a shipping lane and attempt to flag down a passing ship, all the while combating circling sharks and a brutal sun. Available on Amazon Prime.
127 Hours, 2010
Regardless of your feelings about Aron Ralston, his tale of getting trapped in a canyon in Utah is compelling as hell. Director Danny Boyle and actor James Franco tell the story of a hiker pinned to a wall by a boulder for five days in such vivid detail that you can' help but wonder what you'd do in Ralston's shoes. Available to rent on Amazon for $3.99.
Touching the Void, 2003
The true story of Joe Simpson and Simon Yates facing disaster while attempting to descend after summiting the Siula Grande in Peru. After Joe breaks his leg on the descent, the two face increasingly difficult situations that ultimately leave Joe to fend for himself. The story of his survival is inspiring, to say the least. Available to rent on Amazon for $3.99.

The Way Back, 2010
Inspired by a true story, this film tracks seven escapees from a Siberian gulag who have to trek 4,000 miles on foot across the Gobi desert, facing blistering Siberian cold, wolves, oppressive desert heat, and the damn Himalayas to make their way to freedom. Available on Netflix.
Open Water, 2003
Another film loosely based on a true story, Open Water is the tale of two scuba divers who are accidentally left behind by their tour boat and left stranded in shark-infested waters. In addition to the sharks, over the course of the film they have to deal with the unrelenting sun, dehydration, and stinging jellyfish. If you thought Jaws was too sappy, this is the perfect film for you. Available to rent on Amazon for $2.99.
The Impossible, 2012
Based on a true store, The Impossible will have you on the edge of your seat. Starting out on an idyllic family holiday in Thailand, it soon takes a turn as the they must fight for survival after a massive tsunami tears their lives apart. Available to rent on Amazon for $3.99.
28 Days Later, 2002
Come on, we had to throw a zombie film in here somewhere. And 28 Days later is one of the best. Danny Boyle's terrifying direction and Alex Garland's script took the schlocky zombie genre and made an art film with it. Besides, if/when the zombie apocalypse actually happens, this will give you an idea of how to survive it. Available to rent on Amazon for $3.99.
Now sit back, grab some popcorn (or Clif Bars), and start watching these gems.

Some of these are must-watch fantasy movies on Amazon Prime in 2020.
Some of the top fantasy movies on Prime Videos aren't necessarily new, and you've probably already seen them. However, there are new fantasy movies on Amazon Prime, including recent theatrical releases that together form the best fantasy films on Amazon Prime. So without further ado, let's delve into the Amazon Prime Fantasy movies list.
The Harry Potter Series
Anyone who was a kid in the '90s and delved into fantasy worlds has definitely read the Harry Potter books. Granted, the books went downhill after the Goblet of Fire, but they were still entertaining. The recreation of the books on the big screen isn't as perfect as say, Lord of the Rings but it is extremely entertaining nonetheless. All the 7 books have been translated into 8 movies and are very faithful to the lore and world established by author J. K. Rowling. The movies are a fun watch for the entire family and can entertain the young and old alike.
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them
An extension of the Harry Potter universe is the Fantastic Beasts movies. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them sets the stage for a magical world without the famous Harry Potter and gives viewers a different perspective, a new villain, and a new hero in the magical world. There are 2 movies in the Fantastic Beasts franchise and honestly, the first one is the best. However, if you are interested, you could check out the second movie in the franchise, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald which is also available on Amazon Prime Video.
Shazam
Best Adventure Movies On Amazon Prime July 2020
Shazam will delight the child in all our hearts. That's how good the movie is. The story is simple. A boy has the power to say a magic word and become a superhero. He is still the boy in a super powerful man's body. The sky's the limit for what tricks one can play. But what happens when courage is tested? What happens when this boy in a man's body has to choose between doing what is right and what is easy? That's the question the movie answers along with being a fun ride with a lot of comic relief.
Aquaman
Another DC movie on this list takes us to the fantastical underwater world of Atlantis. This is another coming of age movie that the entire family can enjoy. Aquaman is the story of a superhero who has greatness thrust upon him and must find it in his heart to be just, as a King. The movie has some breathtaking action sequences, so expect super awesome underwater CG and it's needless to say that Jason Momoa is as perfect as Aquaman as Hugh Jackman is for Wolverine.
Van Helsing
Speaking of Hugh Jackman, he is the lead in the fantastical world of the vampire slayer, Van Helsing. The plot of the movie revolves around Van Helsing, a legendary monster hunter, who is sent to Transylvania in order to prevent Count Dracula from executing his evil plan. Despite being a movie that came out in 2004, Van Helsing still holds up visually. Richard Roxburgh who plays Dracula has also done a great job. But personally speaking, Claes Bang is still my favorite Dracula.
Oblivion
If you haven't seen Oblivion, it's hard to describe the plot without ruining it. The movie takes place in a post-apocalyptic world where Jack Harper (Tom Cruise) is a Drone repairman living literally in the sky. He takes the plunge and goes into the 'radiation' zone and discovers that all is not what it seems. If you like the sci-fi fantasy action movies that Tom Cruise makes like Edge of Tomorrow or War of the Worlds, then this is one that you will definitely enjoy.
The Mummy
It's hard to believe that the Mummy was released way back in 1999. The visual effects of the movie hold up relatively well today and the plot is one action-adventure you will definitely enjoy. We aren't talking about the Tom Cruise reboot of the movie here, FYI. We are talking about the original one starring Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz. Arnold Vosloo does a fantastic job of portraying the iconic Mummy. The first 2 movies in the franchise - The Mummy and The Mummy Returns are fantastic with the third movie in the series, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor being an average entry. Safe to say, you can enjoy the first 2 movies on Prime Video and ignore the rest.
The Chronicles of Riddick
If planet conquering is more the fantasy movie you are looking for, then you can check out the Chronicles of Riddick. Richard Riddick played by Vin Diesel is a convict with a price on his head. He must face the Necromongers, a race of religious fanatics who are systematically conquering planets.
Tumbbad
The only Indian movie on this list, Tumbbad may seem like a horror movie when you watch it but it is one set in India during British rule. A family builds a shrine for Hastar, a monster who is never to be worshipped. The family attempts to get their hands on Hastar's treasure. It is only when their greed gets too ambitious that they realize the trouble they are in. It is a very gripping movie and one that deserves your attention and will give you more than a few jumpscares.

The Lord of the Rings trilogy
Best Adventure Movies On Amazon Prime Uk
The Lord of the Rings trilogy is a must-watch for anyone looking for the ultimate fantasy experience. It doesn't get better than the Lord of the Rings. Even though the first movie in the series was released back in 2001, it still holds up visually even today. That's a testament to the effort and care taken between practical effects and special effects. We wish the extended versions were on Prime Video for the true Lord of the Rings experience, but the standard editions on offer provide an immersive experience nonetheless. The story of the trilogy may be simple, but it is the journey itself that will keep you engaged. If you would like to introduce someone to a fantasy world, The Lord of the Rings is the best place to start.
