The specs reveal the devices – iPhone 12, iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max – have 'NFC with reader mode' along with as 'ultra wideband chip for spatial awareness,' with the caveat that ultra wideband availability varies by region. Near Field Communication (NFC) enables devices within a few centimeters of each other to exchange information wirelessly. IOS apps running on supported devices can use NFC scanning to read data from electronic tags attached to real-world objects. January 14, 2021 (Updated for iOS 14, iPhone 12, 12 Mini, 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max) Near Field Communication or NFC was invented in 2002 to add contactless data transfer to low power mobile devices (like the iPhone). We are going to be looking at what iOS 12 allows NFC to do. What is NFC on your iPhone? NFC (Near Field Communication) is a framework that works by tagging and reading data in an NFC Data Exchange Format. This iPhone NFC setting was first introduced with the iOS 11 update. Yeah, NFC is always in on the 11's and 12's so the button won't be there in Control Panel.
Remember MagSafe? The beloved charging plug for MacBooks was given the boot when Apple moved to USB-C charging, but the company just brought it back as a new standard for iPhone charging and accessories.
With a ring of magnets around a new charging coil design, along with improved shielding and NFC, you can sort of 'snap' the iPhone 12 or iPhone 12 Pro to a new MagSafe wireless charger, just like you do with the Apple Watch.
The more precise alignment and improved internal components allow for faster charging—up to 15 watts instead of 7.5 on earlier iPhones (or 12W for the iPhone 12 mini). That's about as fast as charging previous iPhones plugged in!
What Is Nfc On Iphone
This doesn't make existing Qi chargers are useless. The new iPhones still support existing Qi-enabled wireless charging at rates up to 7.5 watts, just as previous iPhones have.
More than charging
The new MagSafe standard is about more than just charging. Apple has added a single-turn coil NFC antenna and a magnetometer to the MagSafe components, so the phone can recognize and react to accessories.
The magnets enable all sorts of snap-on accessories and cases. MagSafe cases will snap on securely, but will still allow the chargers and other accessories to snap on to the back at the same time. Apple is making new silicone, clear, and leather cases that securely snap on to the MagSafe magnets, and allow MagSafe snap-on charging right through them.
Apple has even got a slim snap-on MagSafe wallet, for example. There are third-party chargers and accessories coming, too.
Apple's got a new MagSafe Duo charger that will charge your iPhone 12 and Apple Watch at the same time, and folds up for travel. There's no word yet on when it will be available or how much it will cost.
Apple's official MagSafe charger is a reasonable $39, though it does not come with a power adapter. The leather wallet is $59 and comes in four colors, and the silicone and clear cases are $49 no matter which size of iPhone 12 it's for. The official Apple leather cases do not yet have a price or release date.
Third-party developers are already at work making MagSafe compatible products. Apple called out a car mount and a multi-device charging dock from Belkin, for example, but you can probably expect the array of snap-on magnetically attached devices for iPhones to expand rapidly over the coming months.
Near Field Communication
Near Field Communication (NFC) enables devices within a few centimeters of each other to exchange information wirelessly. iOS apps running on supported devices can use NFC scanning to read data from electronic tags attached to real-world objects. For example, a user can scan a toy to connect it with a video game, a shopper can scan an in-store sign to access coupons, or a retail employee can scan products to track inventory.

In-App Tag Reading
An app can enable single- or multiple-object scanning when the app is active, and display a scanning sheet whenever the user is expected to scan something.
Don't encourage people to make contact with physical objects. To scan a tag, an iOS device must simply be within close proximity of the tag. It doesn't need to actually touch the tag. Use terms like scan and hold near instead of tap and touch when asking people to scan objects.
Use approachable terminology. Near Field Communication may be unfamiliar to some people. To make it approachable, avoid referring to technical, developer-oriented terms like NFC, Core NFC, Near Field Communication, and tag. Instead, use friendly, conversational terms that most people will understand.

Provide succinct instructional text for the scanning sheet. Provide a complete sentence, in sentence case, with ending punctuation. Identify the object to scan, and revise the text appropriately for subsequent scans. Keep the text short to avoid truncation.

Background Tag Reading
Background tag reading lets people scan tags quickly any time, without needing to first open your app and initiate scanning. On devices that support background tag reading, the system automatically looks for nearby compatible tags whenever the screen is illuminated. After detecting and matching a tag with an app, the system shows a notification that the user can tap to send the tag data to the app for processing. Note that background reading is disabled when an NFC scanning sheet is visible, Wallet or Apple Pay are in use, cameras are in use, the device is in airplane mode, and the device is locked after a restart.
Support both background and in-app tag reading. Your app must still provide an in-app way to scan tags, for people with devices that don't support background tag reading.
